Two of today’s three Round of 32 ties are played on Canadian soil, which makes July 2 a proper occasion for anyone following this tournament from here. Spain open the card against Austria out in Los Angeles, then the action swings home: Portugal meet Croatia at BMO Field in Toronto, and Switzerland close the night against Algeria under the roof at BC Place in Vancouver. One is a prohibitive favourite, one is a heavyweight farewell, and one is the tightest game on the board. Below I walk each fixture, give the decimal price, and land on the angle I would actually take — and, as always, I would rather pass than chase a line that has already moved.

Spain vs Austria — 3:00 PM ET, Los Angeles

Spain are 1.33 to win, the draw is 5.25 and Austria are out at 10.00 — a board that tells you the market sees only one outcome. Spain came through Group H unbeaten and, for the first time in their history, completed a World Cup group stage without conceding a single goal. The complication is up front: Nico Williams (adductor) and Yeremy Pino (shoulder) are both ruled out, which throws even more of the creative load onto 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. Austria, under Ralf Rangnick, are here for the first time since 1998 and arrive with a fully fit squad built around Arnautović, Sabitzer and Laimer.

At 1.33 there is nothing to back on the result. With two first-choice wingers out, I am not rushing to a Spain handicap either; the honest play here is a low-stakes look at Yamal in the shot and assist markets, or simply passing and saving the bankroll for the two games that follow. The match is at SoFi Stadium under its fixed roof but open sides — effectively open-air, warm and dry.

Portugal vs Croatia — 7:00 PM ET, Toronto

The pick of the night, and it is at BMO Field. Portugal are 1.77 to 1.80, the draw is 3.40 to 3.65 and Croatia are 4.70 to 5.00 — a proper contest between two sides with a deep shared history. Portugal finished second in Group K on five points (a 1–1 with DR Congo, 5–0 over Uzbekistan, 0–0 with Colombia); Croatia took second in Group L on six (2–4 to England, 1–0 Panama, 2–1 Paraguay). The head-to-head leans Portuguese — they have won seven of the ten meetings, drawn two and lost one, the last a 1–1. Overnight money came for Croatia, whose price shortened noticeably, which tells you the market respects Modrić’s side more than the outright board does.

The story that hangs over the night is that this is almost certainly the last World Cup for both Cristiano Ronaldo (40) and Luka Modrić (41) — one of them bows out here. My lean is Portugal to advance but Croatia to keep this tight — the draw at better than 3.40 into extra time is not the worst insurance on the card.

Switzerland vs Algeria — 11:00 PM ET, Vancouver

The nightcap, and the tightest game on the board: Switzerland 2.02, the draw 3.10, Algeria 3.94. It is a late one for the East and a manageable 8:00 PM out in Vancouver, where BC Place hosts. Switzerland won Group B on seven points — the same group that included Canada, whom they beat 2–1 — and Manzambi has been their standout with three goals and an assist. Algeria squeaked through third in Group J on four points after a 3–3 with Austria, and they carry a fitness worry in Amoura (thigh), a serious doubt. There is a subplot too: Algeria’s coach Vladimir Petković spent seven years in charge of Switzerland and now aims to knock out the side he built.

At 2.02 Switzerland are close to a true even-money price, which is about right for a fixture this tight. If Amoura does not make it, I nudge toward Switzerland; if he starts, this is a coin-flip and I would rather take the draw at 3.10 or leave it alone. One prohibitive favourite, one heavyweight farewell, one true 50-50 — that is the shape of July 2.
